Two racegoers were taken to hospital for treatment following an incident which saw a horse crash through barriers at Cartmel, after suffering a fatal injury.

Spectators at the racecourse, which included Tyson Fury, witnessed the incident in the third race of the day on Monday.

Wbee, which was ridden by jockey Alan Doyle, was pulled up quickly after the second hurdle from the finish.

Footage showed the moments leading up to the incident, which saw the 10-year-old horse trailing behind rivals.

Wbee then appeared to suffer an injury which had cause Doyle to pull up the veteran, but he was unable to fully gain control.

Wbee then veered off and went through a barrier, leading to the horse crashing into two spectators.

Cartmel issued a statement confirming the incident and the death of Wbee following the injury.

'Cartmel Racecourse can confirm that during the third race of today's meeting a horse experienced a veterinary issue that caused it to deviate from the course, where it came into contact with a group of spectators,' a statement read.

'On-site medical teams responded immediately and two people were taken to hospital for further treatment.

'The horse, Wbee, received prompt veterinary attention on site but sadly did not recover.'

The incident led to a one-hour delay to the bank holiday meeting, with the Cavendish Cup the main event.

The meeting was attended by former heavyweight world champion Fury, who had two runners in the Big Gypsy King and Sea The Clouds on the course.

Big Gypsy King finished fifth out of seven - but last of the finishers - in its race.

Fury then saw Sea The Clouds pulled up in the early stages of the Cavendish Cup.
