A crowd of revellers draped in St George's flags were refused entry to a family pub because they were part of a drunk, anti-migrant mob protesting outside a notorious asylum hotel, the manager has revealed.

Footage posted on social media sparked controversy after it showed a confrontation between the group and staff at the doors of the Manor Farm pub in Birmingham.

The female pub manager, standing behind two colleagues acting as doormen can be heard telling him that they would 'serve everyone'.

But the popular boozer, owned by the UK's biggest pub chain Greene King, would not get involved in protests.

The woman has been 'off duty' since bravely confronting the yobs on Sunday afternoon as the owner looks into the 'safety and security issues' of its staff.

In the clip the man is seen and heard verbally abusing and swearing at her and branding her a 'lefty scumbag', 'disgusting' and 'vile' for refusing to let him into the pub unless he put the flag away or left it outside.

He also accused her of being unpatriotic, yelling at her: 'It's your own country and you don't even like your own flag.'

Another member of staff told today that the man had been drunk and was part of a 200-strong protest outside the neighbouring Holiday Inn Express hotel that is well known to house asylum seekers.

The duty manager, stepping in during the temporary absence of the female general manager, told the Daily Mail: 'I've seen the video on twitter, but it does not tell the whole story.'

The employee, who declined to be named, said: 'That man was part of a 200-strong mob who had been protesting outside the hotel next door on Sunday against it housing asylum seekers.

'They were very rowdy and bad tempered. Many of that group were already drunk and they wanted to come into the pub to get more drunk. That's why we refused them entry.

'This is a family pub, and we welcome anyone, including people who wear football shirts, or carry flags, as long as they behave politely.

'But we also reserve the right to refuse entry or to serve anyone, as with any licensed premises.'

The pub shares a car park with the hotel next door which houses refugees. Some of them regularly visit the premises to eat and drink.

A pub source said: 'Whenever the migrants come in they never cause any trouble or any problems for us.

'They are always welcome to come here.

A senior member of staff arrived at the entrance and confirmed that the person recording the video must take off his England flag if he wants to be served

'The group protesting on Sunday against them were the trouble makers. Many of them were draped in and carrying England flags and wanted to come into the pub.

'It was mainly men but there were a few women among them.'

It was business as usual for the pub in Castle Vale today with customers condemning the verbal attack on the female manager.

One mother called Karen, who saw the video, said: 'The behaviour of that man towards that poor woman and other staff members was absolutely shocking.

'It does not make me proud to be British.'

Her friend said: 'She had every right to ban him from coming in and the language he used against her was vile and so horrible to hear.'

The pub manager has been given full backing by owners Greene King.

A spokesperson said: 'The safety and security of our teams and customers is our utmost priority.

The incident came amid a growing number of clashes over St George and Union flags being displayed across England

'Our pubs are places for people to come together and socialise without the concern of being caught up in a protest.

'As such, we do not allow materials associated with political protests within our pubs and ask customers to remove them and put them away before entering.'

The confrontation on Sunday afternoon does not appear to have affected business at the traditional 'carvery' that is located between an elevated section of the M6 and the Jaguar Land Rover factory in Castle Bromwich.

The pub was doing a roaring trade with families and groups of friends making the most of Greene King's £6.99 mid-week lunch offer.

The manager said: 'We like to think we are part of the community and welcome everyone.

'We are particularly popular with families with children.

'As you can see yourself, that incident has not affect our business. We are busy as usual.'
