Best-selling new cars of 2026 so far as cheap Chinese brands and switch to electric creates a market shift

Best-selling new cars of 2026 so far as cheap Chinese brands and switch to electric creates a market shift

As we reach the half way point of 2026, it's time to take stock of which cars are proving popular this year in a market that's seeing a dramatic shift right now.

The emergence of cheap Chinese brands in the last two years has thrown a significant cat among the pigeons in terms of the best-selling models in Britain.

So too has the discontinuation of some evergreen nameplates like the Ford Fiesta and Focus that have dominated the charts for decades.

And with carmakers very much in the midst of their transitions to electric vehicles, some are benefitting from the switch more than others.

As such, there are cars among the top 10 most delivered in the first six months of 2026 that wouldn't have been anywhere near the sharp end of popularity five years ago.

And some of the brands represented among the best-sellers didn't even sell cars in Britain in 2021.

Here's a countdown of the ten most popular by registrations between January and June 2026.

10. Tesla Model Y - 15,341 sales

Price: from £41,990

The availability of a cheaper 'Standard' Model Y has pushed Tesla's electric SUV back into the rankings of the 10 most popular new cars in Britain

Tesla's SUV has a decorated sales history. In 2023, it was the world's best-selling car, period, with 1.22 million delivered to customers globally that year. It's also been Britain's favourite EV since it arrived in dealers in late 2021, topping the annual EV registrations charts every year since.

But Chinese newcomers and the market's shift to electrification have eaten into the Model Y's popularity. Last year, it didn't even break into the top 10 most ordered motors.

But a massive shipment of cars arriving in June has pushed it into the popularity league table once more in the first half of 2026.

Returning demand has been partly bolstered by a significant facelift for the Model Y and the availability since January of a new entry-level variant, the £42,000 Standard. As such, Elon Musk's car firm has handed over 15,341 examples to drivers in Britain in the opening six months of the year.

9. Volvo XC40 - 16,031 sales

Price: from £35,860

The XC40 has been on sale since 2018 but continues to draw customers. Over 16,000 have been delivered to drivers in Britain between January and June

Volvo's award-winning XC40 has so far in 2026 amassed 16,031 registrations, which puts it on course to better its registrations performance last year, when showrooms delivered 30,404 cars to customers.

Since arriving on the market in 2018, the Swedish brand's first compact SUV has been a real force.

Having picked up a stash of motoring gongs, it has successfully turned widespread industry praise into significant sales. Today, it is by far the company's most popular model among Britons.

A combination of chunky - but stylish - looks, loads of comfort, a contemporary cabin and a high degree of safety [as you'd expect from a Volvo] has put this luxury 4x4 among the array of mainstream SUVs tallying up the largest sales figures.

8. Mini Cooper - 16,295 sold

Price: from £24,735

The Mini Cooper has returned to the top 10 best-sellers. The availability of petrol and electric options, as well as the bigger five-door model, has broadened its market appeal

Out of the top 10 most popular new cars this year, just the Mini Cooper and one other are produced in the UK. But even this sixties icon isn't exclusively made here in Britain.

Many of the 16,295 delivered in 2026 will be the Cooper Electric, which unlike its petrol counterpart (built at the Cowley plant in Oxford) is made in China.

No matter where the car is made, the fourth generation of BMW's reborn Mini continues to attract customers with its retro appeal, brilliant handling and an array of customising options that allow drivers to create a Cooper that's unique to them.

The availability of five-door variants and the hot John Cooper Works option have also broadened its market appeal.

7. MG HS - 16,721 sales

Price: from £26,495

The MG HS has been the best-selling Chinese car for a number of years - but it looks set to be comprehensively overtaken in 2026

The MG HS is the most popular budget-friendly SUV in the UK - but it's no longer the best-selling Chinese model.

A major upgrade to the HS in late 2023 brought sleeker looks and even more space - though with a fractional increase in price.

The new HS is not just bigger but has a comprehensively overhauled cabin and a varied selection of engine options, including a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.

While price is still a strong USP, so too are ultra-competitive lease deals, which is where a lot of registration traction is generated.

6. Volkswagen Golf - 17,552 sales

Price: from £28,910

The VW Golf is still Britain's favourite family hatchback having amassed over 17,500 sales in the first half of 2026

Given its decades of popularity, it was difficult to fathom in 2023 how the VW Golf dropped out of the top 10 best-sellers.

But Volkswagen's evergreen model has very much cemented itself back among the most in-demand motors in the last two years - and looks set to continue its reign as Britain's favourite family hatchback in 2026.

With 17,552 sales in the opening six months of 2026, it is firmly Volkswagen's most popular product as the German giant retains its crown as Britain's most popular new car brand.

The line-up is available with a choice of petrol, hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, as well as the GTI and R hot hatches: there's pretty much a Golf for everyone.

5. Vauxhall Corsa - 18,470 sales

Price: from £19,090

Vauxhall's Corsa is still the best-selling small car in Britain. With almost 18,500 registrations, deliveries are on course to almost match 2025's sales

Since the demise of the Ford Fiesta in 2023, conventional superminis have found it tough to stay relevant against a growing SUV market. And this includes the perennial favourite from Vauxhall - the Corsa - which has been on our roads since the 1990s.

It dropped out of the top 10 best-sellers list entirely as recently as 2024, which is a huge fall from grace for a model that topped the sales charts in 2021.

But last year, it bounded back up to fourth in the standings with almost 40,000 registrations.

The availability of the Corsa Electric and Corsa Hybrid has bolstered its popularity, though it is petrol models that are driving the bulk of demand. A sporty GSE Electric is also due in showrooms shortly to widen the model line-up.

4. Nissan Qashqai - 23,103 sales

Price: from £30,635

The Nissan Qashqai is the most popular British-made car. But it's no longer the nation's favourite family SUV, dropping down to third spot in that incredibly competitive segment

The Qashqai was the most-bought new car in 2022, but in the last three and a half years has fallen down the pecking order. And it's now the third most popular family SUV.

With 23,103 registrations this year, it's on course to better its 2025 full-calendar deliveries of 41,141 units but in 2026 so far is just the fourth best-seller overall.

It is still by far Nissan's most ordered car. And it is also the best-selling British-made car, with the Sunderland plant heavily reliant on its continued success.

Its popularity continues to be driven by dealers offering discounts, but also an all-round strong package made even better by the introduction of hybrid engine technology, a plush interior and a built-in Google infotainment system.

3. Jaecoo 7 - 23,840 sales

Price: from £30,165

Value for money is driving the success of the Jaecoo 7, which comes with a relatively affordable price tag but also heaps of equipment and gadgets as standard

This time two years ago, Jaecoo wasn't available in Britain. In fact, three years ago, the brand didn't exist at all. That's how rapidly this - and other - Chinese newcomers are expanding and maturing.

The 7 SUV is by far the biggest Chinese car success story of the last 18 months. The Range Rover Velar lookalike - which has earned it the moniker the 'Temu Range Rover' - has become an attractive prospect in Britain.

Its relatively affordable price isn't solely the reason for its success; it is value for money that's ushered customers into Jaecoo showrooms. With heaps of tech and gadgets as standard, and a high-end-feeling cabin, buyers less concerned about badge image have been snapping them up. Its long-range plug-in hybrid drivetrain has also proved incredibly popular.

The 7 has topped the monthly sales charts in 2026 and with 23,840 registrations by mid-year is likely to remain among the top three best-sellers by the time we reach the end of December.

2. Kia Sportage - 25,828 sales

Price: from £31,395

The Sportage is firmly Britain's favourite medium-sized SUV - but it is going to face stiff competition from Chinese rivals from now on, which will ultimately steal sales away from Kia

The Kia Sportage - which shares a platform with the Hyundai Tucson - is now firmly Britain's favourite family SUV.

The fifth iteration of the Sportage on sale now is proof of how far the manufacturer has come in recent years, with the five-seater packed with kit and offering a refined ride.

Like the Tucson, it has distinctive styling - especially its boomerang-shaped headlights. Sold with a choice of petrol, conventional hybrid and plug-in hybrid drivetrains, there's plenty of choice for customers, too.

The 25,828 that have entered the roads already this year prove its popularity in the most competitive segment of all.

1. Ford Puma - 29,642 sales

Price: from £25,245

The Ford Puma is on course to be Britain's favourite new car for a fourth consecutive year

Ford's Puma is aiming for a fourth consecutive year at the top of the sales charts - and it has started strongly, building a near-4,000-unit lead over its next-best rival.

Historically, Ford has been a dominant force in the sales charts. In the 55 years that registrations have officially been tracked, a model with the blue oval badge has topped the charts an astonishing 52 times.

Its run of having the number one car in the UK stretched from the Cortina in 1972 to the Fiesta in 2020. But with its popular supermini resigned to the history books, the Puma has taken over the mantle as the company's major seller.

Once again, it is the nation's favoured super-compact SUV, outperforming the likes of the Nissan Juke, Skoda Kamiq and Vauxhall Mokka.

Customers have been drawn to its stylish looks, engaging handling and boost in practicality and elevated driving position compared with a conventional hatchback.

Its appeal was broadened in 2025 with the all-electric Puma Gen-E version, which, starting from just £25,245, is almost £2,000 cheaper than the petrol version.
