The idea that property is a rock solid investment is one that's deeply ingrained in the British psyche. In this video episode of the Investing Show, we look at whether that's true.

Many would much rather put money into bricks and mortar than the stock market, whether that's investing in their own home, a second home or buy-to-let.

But is that faith misguided? After being shocked by a conversation with a friend who said they had just sold their flat that they bought in 2016 for less than they paid for it, Duncan Lamont, head of strategic research at Schroders, decided to take a proper look at the numbers.

Duncan joins Simon Lambert to talk through what his deep dive uncovered. He explains what has happened to property and the global, US and UK stock markets over the past five and 20 years and how returns have compared to inflation – and what happens if you use a pension to invest.

The chart below highlights how the global stock market has comfortably beaten the property market and inflation over the past five years, Duncan explains how extending the time period to 20 years changes the picture. And why he still thinks buying your own home is a good idea.
