Five best family-friendly EVs that evade Rachel Reeves' £440-a-year 'expensive car' road tax sting

Rachel Reeves announced in the 2025 Budget that the threshold for the Expensive Car Supplement (ECS) - an additional road tax levy on pricier models - will be upped for electric cars from next month.

Instead of being set at the existing level of £40,000 for petrol and diesel rivals, EVs costing £49,999 or less will evade the Chancellor's contentious Vehicle Excise Duty sting.

This new rule comes into effect from 1 April and - if you choose wisely - means you can get your hands on a capable, tech-laden family EV that escapes a £440 annual surcharge.

The change also applies retrospectively, meaning sub-£50k vehicles registered from 1 April 2025 will not be required to pay the charge, which is levied on top of the standard rate of VED - which is going up to £200-a-year from next month - from the second year after registration for five successive terms.

With EVs typically more expensive than combustions rivals, the extra £10,000 wiggle room not only helps more drivers dodge premium taxation amounting to £2,200 in total but opens the door to a whole new roster of electric cars.

But which sub-£50k EVs should you have your eye on? Here's five of the best to consider...

1. Polestar 2

Price: from £45,160

The Polestar 2 won't be hit with the ECS if you get the Standard Range Single Motor for £45,160 or the Long range Single motor for £49,160

Two Polestar 2 versions fall under the £50k threshold: Standard range Single motor and Long range Single motor.

The former costs £45,160 while the latter costs £49,160.

The Standard range still gives you a very healthy 344 miles of range, 268bhp and a 0 to 60mph of 6.1 seconds.

The rear-wheel drive EV can DC charge 10 per cent – 80 per cent 26 minutes and has a top speed of 127mph.

The Long range version takes the range up to 410 miles, increases the bhp to 295 and reduces the 0 to 60 to 5.9 seconds.

Both versions come with a 12.3-inch central display and an 11.2-inch driver screen, both with Google built-in.

2. Volvo EX40

Price: from £42,360

The EX40 family SUV can be snapped up for £42,360 or you can upgrade to the Black Edition for £47,810

Another Swedish EV: You can purchase the EX40 family SUV from £42,360 or you can upgrade to the Black Edition for £47,810.

There are three trims below the £50k mark on the standard EX40 and within that price bracket you can opt for the Extended range option which will give you 354 miles on a single charge.

Similar to the Polestar 2 the EX40 comes with Google built-in, as well as comfort features including heated seats, a suite of safety assists, and a 410-litre boot (up to 460 in some versions) and a 31-litre frunk.

3. Mercedes CLA Electric

Price: from £45,615

The Mercedes CLA Sport Edition costs £45,615 and has a massive 483-mile range

The new CLA is making a big slash as it aims for near price parity with the hybrid models.

The Sport Edition costs £45,615 and has a staggering 483-mile range. It can do 0 to 60 in 6.7 seconds and has a top speed of 130mph.

Plus, you get DC charging of 320kW which gives you 10 to 80 per cent charge in 22 minutes.

Inside there's Mercedes new MBUX Superscreen, AI virtual assistant and new sports seats.

And even the AMG Line edition scrapes under the ECS at £49,375.

4. Tesla Model Y

Price: from £41,990

The Rear-Wheel Drive Tesla Model Y versions which fall beneath the ECS cost between £41,990 (the Standard version) and the £48,990 Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive for £48,990

Tesla's Model Y - its best-selling model - had a facelift last year - the first in its history.

Elon Musk's brand updated its SUV with a sleeker, and less bulbous exterior design (new lightbars, blanked off panels and C-shaped headlights), more tech inside and extra comfort features such as redesigned seats.

Perhaps most helpfully Tesla has increased the range of the new Model Y and introduced a 'Standard' Model which makes it less expensive to buy.

You can snap up a Rear-Wheel Drive model for £41,990 (the Standard version), the Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive for £44,990 and the Premium Long Range Rear-Wheel Drive for £48,990.

Get the Long Range and you'll get 383 miles of range, as well as up to 200 miles of recharge in just 15 minutes.

5. Skoda Enyaq

Price: from £45,500

The Enyaq falls under the ECS at £45,500 and delivers 359 miles of range

Czech manufacturer Skoda has won the hearts of many drivers, and its Enyaq has continued to prove Skoda knows how to win people around when it comes to EVs too.

The Enyaq Edition 85 costs £45,500 and delivers 359 miles of range.

A smart, muscular and non-flashy SUV, the Enyaq can also be purchased as a coupe.

You get tech including head-up display, a digital cockpit, remote smart features including charging and pre-conditioning, and a spacious 585-litre boot.

It's great for long distance EV family road trips.
