Trump questions if Iran's new supreme leader is even ALIVE... as he says US could strike crippled Kharg Island oil facility again 'just for fun': Live updates

Iran's new supreme leader may be dead, Donald Trump has claimed, despite state TV reading a statement attributed to him earlier in the week.

In an interview with NBC news, the US President said he's hearing Mojtaba Khamenei is 'not alive', adding that 'so far, nobody's been able to show him'.

Trump's comments come a day after Pete Hegseth, the war secretary, said the new leader was likely 'disfigured' after being wounded in US-Israeli attacks.

Mojtaba Khamenei's father, Ali Khamenei, who had ruled Iran for 37 years, was killed when his compound in Tehran was razed to the ground on February 28, sparking the start of the Iran war.

Meanwhile, Trump reiterated claims on Saturday evening that the US had 'totally demolished' Kharg Island - a critical hub for Iranian oil exports.

He added however that 'we may hit it a few more times just for fun'.

Iran retaliated by striking a major oil hub in the UAE, with plumes of black smoke seen billowing into the skies above the port of Fujairah following a drone attack.

Trump questions whether Iran's new supreme leader is even alive - as he says he is not ready to make a deal to end war

President Donald Trump has said he is not ready to make a deal with Iran to end the war 'because the terms aren’t good enough yet'.

In an interview with NBC News, the president also questioned whether Iran’s new supreme leader is 'even alive'.

He said: 'I don't know if he's even alive. So far, nobody's been able to show him...

'The only one making a presentation is they read a so-called statement from him.

'I'm hearing he's not alive, and if he is, he should do something very smart for his country, and that's surrender... Some of them think he's alive but very badly wounded.'

Speaking of US strikes, Trump added they had 'totally demolished' most of Kharg Island but said 'we may hit it a few more times just for fun'.

Trump renews calls for other countries to help 'take care' of Hormuz Strait

Donald Trump has made a further plea for countries to join efforts to prevent Iran from shutting off the Strait of Hormuz.

He said in a post on Truth Social that countries 'that receive Oil through the Hormuz Strait must take care of that passage'.

Iranian military vows to 'pursue and kill' Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu

Iran's military made a chilling promise to kill Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, state media reports.

Iran's semi-official Mehr news agency reports that the Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) will 'continue to pursue and kill him with force'.

The IRGC also claims targets in Israel, including three American bases, have been destroyed in its 52nd wave of attacks.

Twenty people reportedly arrested in north-western Iran for attempting to cooperate with Israel

Twenty people were arrested in northwestern Iran for attempting to cooperate with Israel, Tasnim news agency reported on Sunday, citing a statement by the West Azerbaijan province's prosecutor office.

They are accused of sending location details on Iran's military and security assets to Israel.

Israel has launched a new phase of its assault on Iran, targeting security checkpoints based on tip-offs from informants on the ground, a source briefed on Israel's military strategy told Reuters last week.

Russia is supplying Iran with Shahed drones, claims Zelensky

Russia is supplying Iran with Shahed drones to use against the US and Israel, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told CNN in an interview excerpt aired on Saturday.

Zelensky told CNN's Fareed Zakaria it is '100% facts' that Iran has used Russian-made Shaheds to attack US bases.

Shahed drones have been linked to other attacks on countries in the region, although their manufacturers are not always clear.

Iran pioneered the Shahed drone, a much cheaper alternative to expensive missiles.

They first saw mass use in Russia's invasion of Ukraine, where thousands of them have been launched by Russian forces since fall 2022, according to the Ukrainians.

Although Iran initially provided the drones, Russia now manufactures its own Shaheds.

The armed forces of other countries have since adopted Shahed-type drones, including the U.S. military, which has said they are part of the current campaign against Iran.

Iran fired over 100 drones and ballistic missiles on Saturday, April 13, 2024, in retaliation to an attack on a building attached to the country's consular annex in Damascus that killed the guards, and two generals of the Quds Force of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on April 01, 2024. South Korea will 'carefully review' Trump's call for allies to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz

South Korea's presidential office said on Sunday that it would carefully review U.S. President Donald Trump's calls on allies to send warships to secure the Strait of Hormuz.

'We will communicate closely with the U.S. regarding this matter and make a decision after careful review,' the office said in a statement.

Britain's military chiefs are considering sending drones to unblock Iran's stranglehold over a key oil shipping route, as US President Donald Trump called for allied warships to protect tankers in the region.

On Saturday, Trump urged the UK and other nations to send naval vessels as part of a global flotilla to help secure the Strait of Hormuz.

In an appeal to nations affected by the price spikes on his Truth Social platform, Mr Trump said: 'Hopefully China, France, Japan, South Korea, the UK, and others, that are affected by this artificial constraint will send ships to the area so that the Hormuz Strait will no longer be a threat by a nation that has been totally decapitated.

'In the meantime, the United States will be bombing the hell out of the shoreline and continually shooting Iranian boats and ships out of the water.

'One way or the other, we will soon get the Hormuz Strait OPEN, SAFE, and FREE!'

The Ministry of Defence responded by saying 'a range of options' were being considered to secure shipping through the strait, where some 20 per cent of the world's oil ordinarily passes through each day.

A spokesperson for the MoD said: 'As we've said previously, we are currently discussing with our allies and partners a range of options to ensure the security of shipping in the region.'

Let us try to be fair. In any age, recruiting and equipping armed forces is expensive and difficult, and you can never be sure if they will pass the test of combat.

During the 1916 Battle of Jutland, after two British battlecruisers had blown up under German fire, Admiral David Beatty turned to a subordinate and said: ‘There seems to be something wrong with our b***** ships today, Chatfield.’

He was right. Several things were wrong. And so it continued. Between the wars, the giant battlecruiser HMS Hood looked tremendous.

But the truth was less impressive. On one occasion, one of her huge gun turrets slipped off its corroded bearings and could only be put back in place by the ship’s tug-of-war team.

Donald Trump has demanded Britain send warships to help defend the Strait of Hormuz and avert a global recession.

The US President had previously slapped down Sir Keir Starmer, saying earlier this month that his offer of assistance was no longer needed because the war was already won.

But on a day of escalating tension in which Tehran threatened to use helicopters to kidnap US soldiers, Mr Trump urged the UK to join an international armada to force open the blockaded Strait, where Iran has begun laying mines.
