It's undeniably the most sought-after, and glamorous, job in television.
Indeed, the role of presenting Strictly Come Dancing has become such a popular one that almost every well-known celebrity in
Britain has been linked to it.
But the Daily Mail can reveal that One Show host and former contestant Angela Scanlon could be waltzing on to the programme.
It follows meetings over the past few weeks with show bosses, after they approached her to replace Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman – who stepped down at the end of last year.
Strictly sources say the upper echelons at the Corporation believe Ms Scanlon 'befits' the job as they visualise what the popular Saturday night dance show will look like when it returns later this year.
BBC insiders say that their ideal candidate will have starred on the programme –which Ms Scanlon did in 2023.
And she has added appeal because she is the broadcaster's own talent which they have nurtured.
BBC bosses are also keen for at least one of their new presenters to have a regional accent, ticking another box for Ms Scanlon, 42, who is from County Meath, Ireland.
'Angela has been talking to Strictly's bosses about a role on the show very recently,' says a source connected to the programme.
'She is BBC through and through and is regarded as a top professional. The BBC knows she is loved as a presenter of The One Show and that is what those making the hire are really looking at.
'It's looking likely that Angela could get one of the jobs. The Beeb love a regional accent, she's one of the BBC's own and she's no trouble whatsoever.
'There have been many names bandied around, some of which are not realistic.'
It is understood that so-called 'chemistry tests' are the next stage, and they are due to take place after Easter.
So far, the two other women the BBC have in mind are Zoe Ball, the former host of Strictly's spin-off show It Takes Two, and Ms Scanlon's One Show colleague Alex Jones. But while BBC chief content officer Kate Phillips is keen to have both of them as options, sources suggest the women 'aren't necessarily so keen'.
Despite the sequins and glamour, friends of Ms Daly's and Ms Winkleman's have been open about how gruelling working on the show is.
'It is dawn until very late every Friday and Saturday in the run-up to a Christmas: it's not as easy as it looks,' says one.
Meanwhile, it is unlikely there would be two women hosting again, and the BBC is still on the look-out for a male anchor.
The source adds: 'For Angela, Strictly would be a no-brainer. She might not be a superstar but she would grow with the role.'
And when asked in December if she would consider replacing Ms Daly and Ms Winkleman – who announced they were stepping down in October after 14 years hosting together – mother-of-two Ms Scanlon said: 'You know what, I am such a fan of the show and have been forever, I would certainly answer the call.'
Ms Scanlon took part in the 2023 series where she was paired with Carlos Gu.
The couple finished in sixth place when they were eliminated in week ten after a dance-off against Layton Williams, who made it to the final.
