Aldi has issued an urgent recall for a Christmas chocolate product over fears it could trigger deadly allergic reactions.

It has recalled Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks 90g with all best before dates because it may contain peanuts which are not mentioned on the label.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) says 'this means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanuts'.

In a statement, the supermarket said: 'As a precautionary measure, our supplier is recalling Dairyfine Salted Caramel Filled Gonks because it may contain peanuts.

'Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given.

'We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.'

The alert initially issued on Friday was amended on Monday to remove the word 'undeclared' from the title and the batch code because it was the product's barcode (4061463276865).

There will be point of sale notices in all retail stores selling the products, informing them why the product is being recalled and what to do if they have purchased it.

The FSA, which published the alert, issues recalls if there is a risk to consumers because the required allergy label is missing or incorrect, or if there is any other food allergy risk, meaning that a food product should not be sold.

Peanut allergy is one of the most severe and potentially deadly food allergies, affecting around one in 50 children and one in 200 adults in the UK.

For some, even microscopic amounts of peanut protein can trigger anaphylaxis - a rapid, life-threatening allergic reaction.

The charity Allergy Uk says signs and symptoms of an allergic reaction usually occur within minutes of contact with peanuts but can also occur up to one hour later.

Notable fatal cases in recent years have raised awareness of how devastating accidental exposure can be.

In 2016, 15-year-old Megan Lee died after ordering takeaway food that failed to disclose peanut content.

The restaurant owners were later jailed for manslaughter by gross negligence.

The fresh recall comes just a week after Tesco recalled its Celery, Fruit and nut salad over fears it could trigger deadly allergic reactions.

It recalled its Celery, Fruit and Nut Salad with the pack size 300g and use by date December 2, 2025.

The product was found to contain mustard which was not mentioned on the label.

According to the FSA, this meant the product was a ‘possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to mustard’.

Customers with an allergy to mustard were advised to not eat it and to return it to any Tesco store for a full refund.

In a statement, Tesco said: 'We are recalling a specific date code of Tesco Celery and Nut Salad 300g, due to the presence of mustard in the mayonnaise element of the product.

'Mustard was not mentioned on the product label, which may pose a health risk to anyone with an allergy or intolerance to mustard.

'No other Tesco products are affected by this recall. We're sorry for any inconvenience caused.'
