'Sovereign citizen' Dezi Freeman, 56, remains on the run after he allegedly shot and killed two police officers and wounded a third with a home-made shotgun at a property near the small north-east Victorian town of Porepunkah on Tuesday morning.

A 59-year-old detective and a 35-year-old senior constable both died in the horrific incident, which came after 10 officers arrived at the property to serve a warrant.

Freeman allegedly took the dead officers' guns and a police radio to listen to officers' movements and then fled deep into alpine wilderness, about 300km northeast of Melbourne.

A huge police contigent continues to hunt the fugitive as the search enters its fourth day.

Possible sightings of Freeman

Victoria Police Commissioner Mike Bush said it was possible Dezi Freeman has access to 'technology', while also addressing possible sightings of the fugitive.

'I'm not going to give too much away in terms of that, it's quite possible that the suspect at large has access to technology,' Mr Bush said.

'So it will be very unwise of me on behalf of the investigation… to share further information, I'm sure you can understand.'

Commissioner Bush said there have been 'alleged' sightings of Freeman but nothing he could confirm.

'They have been alleged signs which we're exploring, we can't confirm that they are.'

He again encouraged the public to call triple-0 if they believe they have spotted Freeman.

Freeman's wife and son may face charges

Commissioner Bush confirmed Freeman's wife and teenage son were arrested and may be charged.

'There was search warrants executed last night, people were interviewed totally and specifically in relation to the homicide investigation,' he said.

'So those searches have been completed, the interviews have been conducted, those people have been released.

'There may or may not be charges that followed from it would be very inappropriate for me to say anything else at this point.'

He warned anyone helping Freeman that they would be committing an offence.

Local pub reopens for the first time in four days

Porepunkah Pub has reopened for the first time since Tuesday's deadly police shooting.

The watering hole welcomed back weary locals at 4pm Friday.

Our reporter Karleigh Smith says it's 'pretty busy' there tonight.

'Over the past few days, our town has been through an incredibly difficult and unsettling time. We know many in our community are still processing and seeking connection, and we want to offer the pub as a safe and welcoming place for people to gather,' the pub posted online.

'Our team is here to provide a comfortable space where friends, family, neighbours and visitors can sit together, share a meal, and support one another. We believe in the strength of this community and the importance of coming together in moments like these.

'We look forward to welcoming you this afternoon and evening, and we thank you all for the resilience, kindness and support you continue to show.'

Friend of fugitive issued dire warning before shooting: 'We've got to keep a closer eye on him'

A local woman who was friends and attended church with Freeman and his family has urged the fugitive gunman to hand himself in.

Friend Marlie Thomas said Freeman had become more withdrawn in the days before the fatal shootings.

She attends the local Our Lady of Snows Catholic church alongside Freeman and his wife.

'We knew he was withdrawing a little bit,’ she told AAP.

'We said, "we've got to keep a closer eye on him".'

She urged Freeman to 'please come in, hand yourself in'.

Chief Commissioner Mike Bush also warned any people who may want to help Freeman should reconsider.

'This person does not deserve to be aided in any way. If any person knows him or comes in contact with him, they need to encourage him to hand himself in,' he said.

Top cop says 'number one priority is to find the person who murdered our officers'

Commissioner Bush explained why SOG police didn't attend Freeman's property to serve the warrant on Tuesday morning.

‘What I can tell you is it was considered, but it wasn't requested,' he said.

'When they prepare for a search warrant, they'll do a risk assessment. They will then decide what level of risk is attached to that and what resources are required to support that.

'They did not consider a request to the Special Operations Group necessary.'

He ended the press conference with a promise to catch Freeman.

'I want to go back to my original point, the number one priority for the Victoria Police is to find the person who murdered our officers,' he said.

Premier Allan thanks officers

Premier Jacinta Allan appeared alongside Commissioner Mike Bush and thanked police for their efforts to catch Freeman.

'As Premier, along with the minister, we've had the opportunity today to lay a floral tribute in honour of the loss of Neil and Vadim, and to thank also them and recognise their dedicated service to this community and to the wider Victorian community,' Allan said.

'As we can see, there has been an outpouring of support and sympathy for the loss of these two strong members of Victoria Police.

'Finally, too, we've had the opportunity today to see part of the operation response in action.

'So I also want to thank all those members of the Victorian police [and the] wider emergency services family who are deploying every resource.'

Officers from Victoria, New South Wales, South Australia, the ACT, and the AFP are involved in the search.

Police search caves, old mineshafts

Heavily-armed specialist police are understood to be tracking Freeman through a series of caves and disused mineshafts in the alpine region the accused cop killer is believed to have fled.

The update comes as weather conditions in the area are forecast to deteriorate late on Friday with strong winds and snow predicted as a cold front sets in.

Daily Mail reporter Wayne Flower is on the ground.

'It's bloody cold and very windy and the weather coming through is likely to make it tough for everyone involved,' he said.

Freeman, who has bush survival experience, was last seen wearing dark green tracksuit pants, a dark green rain jacket, brown Blundstone boots and reading glasses, police said.

Victoria Police Chief Commissioner Mike Bush will update the public at press conference scheduled for 1.30pm.

Residents in Porepunkah and surrounding areas have been urged to remain vigilant and report any sightings or suspicious behaviour.

PM offers elite AFP officers to join hunt

Anthony Albanese has offered Victoria Premier Jacinta Allan a 'full court press' to join the manhunt for accused cop killer Dezi Feeman.

It's understood the offer includes deploying elite AFP specialist cops.

'What's occurred here is that we have offered the Premier, Jacinta Allan, every support that is required,’ Mr Albanese told the Today show.

'And this is a full court press. This guy clearly is dangerous. He's on the run and we want him caught and we want people who are traumatised in that northeast community of Victoria to feel safe again.

'Porepunkah is a small community and this has devastated them. It's devastated the families of the police officers who've lost their lives and of course, it's devastated, as well, the entire police family.'

Police deploy stun grenades

The Daily Mail and witnesses heard what were first thought to be gunshots at about 5pm on Thursday but it was later confirmed to be stun grenades - also known as flash bangs.

Media reported seeing a 'big flash' near a police chopper while SOG members combed the ground-level area.

A flash bang is a non-lethal explosive device designed to temporarily disorientate individuals by emitting a blinding flash of light and a deafening sound upon detonation.

Cop 'with machine gun'

Sunrise reported witnessing a police officer leaning out the side of a hut on a property with what looked like a machine gun.

The K-9 unit was positioned at the bottom of a mountain as police searched through outhouses during a 'very active' morning in Porepunkah.

Freeman's housemate sends out plea

Freeman's housemate Fabio Zambelli (pictured below) told 10 News he was close to the accused cop killer’s wife Mali and their children who he said were 'highly stressed'.

'To Dezi, do the right thing for your family, give up, surrender,' he said.

'I'm not here to judge, but there's a woman and kids under high stress.'

Mr Zambelli also described Freeman as a 'professional, resilient bushman', and that no one has had contact with him.

'Mali, her family and Dezi and have been very kind to me,' he said.

Mr Zambelli slept in his car on Wednesday night because the Freeman's property has been declared a crime scene.

He urged police to bring Freeman in alive.

'By taking him alive, will allow us to have a better understanding of the situation,' Mr Zambelli said.

Grim warning before cop killings

Fugitive gunman Dezi Freeman sent an ominous warning to authorities that 'they picked the wrong person to mess with' and are 'finding that out'.

The accused cop killer also said 'Freeman's the name freedom's the game' when he appeared on a 2019 episode of The Mike Holt Show - a podcast favoured by cookers and crackpots.

Freeman, who changed his surname from Philby, appeared on the Mike Holt Show to boast about his insane claim he successfully arrested a magistrate at the Wangaratta court in 2019.

The alleged murderer ranted that authorities used him as a 'scapegoat' after an issue arose about road access to Mount buffalo National Park.

Freeman claimed authorities were suing him 'so they effectively get control of the mountain'.

'They think I'm the weak link,' Freeman said. 'They picked the wrong person to mess with, and I think they're finding that out'.

Freeman's wife and son arrested

Details have emerged of a dramatic police raid at a Porepunkah address last night as cops continue to hunt suspected police killer Dezi Freeman.

Fugitive Squad detectives and Special Operations Group members converged at the property (pictured below) and told Freeman's 42-year-old wife, Mali, and their 15-year-old son to 'come out with their hands up' at 8.40pm, neighbours reported.

The pair were arrested, interviewed and then released pending further enquiries.

Police cordoned the area and called out through an armoured all-terrain vehicle known as a 'BearCat' to communicate with Mali and her son while they were in the house.

Neighbours were 'incredibly shocked' by the drama.

There have been no confirmed sightings of Freeman, 56, since two police officers were shot dead and a third injured on Tuesday.

The police chopper was back in the air above Porepunkah early Friday morning.

Daily Mail reporter Wayne Flower confirmed the chopper is flying lower than usual as the search enters its fourth day.
