Adidas has become the latest brand to be hit by a cyberattack.

During the attack, the German sportswear brand said cybercriminals were able to steal 'certain consumer data' through a 'third-party customer service provider'.

Thankfully, the affected data does not contain passwords, credit card, or any other payment-related information, the brand confirmed.

Instead, it mainly consists of contact information relating to customers who had contacted Adidas' customer service help desk in the past.

After becoming aware of the incident on Friday, Adidas said it 'immediately took steps to contain the incident'.

'We immediately took steps to contain the incident and launched a comprehensive investigation, collaborating with leading information security experts,' it explained on its website.

The incident is the latest in a string of cyberattacks targeting retailers.

Marks & Spencer and Co-op were both targeted in major cyberattacks earlier this month - with Marks & Spencer admitting the incident has so far cost it more than a £1 billion.

Adidas posted about the hack on its website on Friday.

It explained that any customers who have potentially been affected have been contacted.

'adidas is in the process of informing potentially affected consumers as well as appropriate data protection and law enforcement authorities consistent with applicable law,' it explained.

'We remain fully committed to protecting the privacy and security of our consumers, and sincerely regret any inconvenience or concern caused by this incident.'

While no financial data or passwords were compromised, the incident highlights the increasing risk for online shoppers, according to Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET.

'When personal data is exposed, it is not just a matter of IT failure, it's a breach of trust and privacy,' Mr Moore told MailOnline.

'While it appears no financial data or passwords were compromised, this incident highlights the increasing risk of supply chain vulnerabilities that have dominated the retail industry in recent weeks.

'Similar to some victims from the recent M&S cyberattack aftermath, Adidas customers should therefore remain alert to potential follow-up phishing attempts and monitor their accounts for any unusual activity.

'Until the full extent of the attack has been analysed, it may even be worth changing their online account password as it can often become apparent at a later date that more data may have been accessed.'

The news comes shortly after Marks & Spencer revealed that disruption from its recent cyberattack is expected to continue through to July and cost the company around £300million.

The British high street giant halted orders on its website and saw empty shelves after being targeted by hackers around a month ago over the Easter weekend.

Now, the retailer - which has 64,000 staff and 565 stores - has said online sales and profits in its fashion, home and beauty business have been 'heavily impacted'.
