Lionel Messi has addressed speculation that he will stave off international retirement for at least another year to lead Argentina at the 2026 World Cup.

In 2022 the 37-year-old led Argentina to glory in Qatar, finally capturing that most prestigious of trophies that had eluded him throughout his career.

With La Albiceleste's third World Cup triumph secured and his individual legacy cemented as one of the greatest players of all time, many assumed Messi would call time on his international career immediately following the tournament.

However, in the years since Messi has remained integral to his country's efforts, and starred in their Copa America win last year.

With the 2026 World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada now just over one year away calls have increased for Messi to lead Argentina as they attempt to defend their title.

Asked about the prospect of playing in 2026 during a recent podcast appearance, the Inter Miami star insisted that he is in no rush to make a decision.

'This year will be key to see what I decide regarding the 2026 World Cup,' Messi told Simplemente Futbol.

'Being able to play consistently, feeling good. Last year I started preseason and had some injuries. This year I had a good preseason, got off to a good start, and I feel good. But it's a long season because it doesn't end until December and the Club World Cup is on.

'I think and see, but I don't want to set goals. I take it day by day and see how I feel physically and be honest with myself.'

Since making the shock move to the MLS in 2023 to join David Beckham's Inter Miami, Messi has been joined in Florida by his former Barcelona team-mate Luis Suarez.

After bowing out of his international career late last year, Suarez insisted his long-time friend has no plans to follow suit.

'Retirement? Leo Messi has that desire to play at the World Cup 2026 with Argentina,' the Uruguayan told Ovacion

'Messi and I talked about retirement in a joking tone, but he's really looking forward to playing in next year's World Cup. It's hard to talk about a deadline, about an end. A football player has to prepare because he's not ready yet.
