A young couple who died in a horrific fire alongside their dogs 'didn't have a chance' of escaping an inferno sparked by an e-bike battery, a firefighter has said.

Natasha Johnson-Mall, 27, and her boyfriend Karlo Bogdan, 24, died after the blaze tore through their home in Stoke Aldermoor, Coventry.

The battery of an e-bike located in the corridor ignited in the early hours of November 8, sparking a fast-developing fire which travelled up their bedroom.

Neighbours quickly called emergency services but unfortunately Natasha, Karlo and their pets Tyagi and Medusa were found dead in the property on The Coppice.

Firefighter Dell Haughton, who attended the blaze said it was 'one of the worst' he'd seen in over two decades.

On approach the brave firefighter couldn't even see the house which was on fire because the smoke was so thick.

'The intensity and the heat was very, very hot,' he said: 'It's one of the hottest incidents I've ever been in. Everything was on fire. All the steps were on fire.

'All the walls were on fire. All the ceiling was on fire. All the doors were on fire.'

Recalling entering the bedroom, he added: 'I've seen some bad incidents in my 21 years, but this is without doubt one of the worst I've ever seen. It was horrible.'

An inquest today concluded the young couple's deaths were accidental.

West Midlands Fire Service as well as Natasha's family have issued a warning in relation to e-bikes, with the emergency service seeing 50 per cent rise in e-bike and lithium-ion related battery fires in last two years.

'The world has lost a truly precious person - uniquely thoughtful and beautiful in every way,' said Natasha's sister, Ehsia: 'I'll never be the same, and I'll never look at life the same.

'Unless you can afford to purchase an e-bike that has undergone rigorous testing and safety checks, do not buy one.'

Assistant chief fire officer Richard Stanton said: 'It's tragic that Natasha and Karlo lost their lives,' he said.

'Their families have shown incredible courage and compassion by speaking out in our video, hoping others might learn from this heartbreaking incident.

'The rapid escalation of fires involving lithium-ion batteries poses a serious risk. Without proper precautions, these fires can devastate homes and lives within minutes.'

Emily Fernandez, Head of Prevention at West Midlands Fire Service, told CoventryLIve: 'It is vital and potentially life-saving that people use these products exactly as instructed.

'Always charge your e-bike while you are awake, unplug it once fully charged, use the approved charger that came with the product, and exercise extreme caution with conversion kits.

'If possible, charge e-bikes outside residential properties, and never charge them in corridors or near fire exits, should you need to leave your home.'

In a GoFundMe page, created to raise funds for Natasha's funeral she was described as having 'an infectious smile' and 'the kindest most genuine soul'.

It read: 'Natasha gained her angel wings on November 8th after an accidental house fire broke out in her flat.

'She had an infectious smile, the kindest most genuine soul, Her family friends and anyone who knew Natasha are heartbroken.'

In a separate fundraising page for Karlo's funeral, his grieving family described him as 'brave and spirited'.
