Marines arrived at the Guantanamo Bay Naval Base in Cuba on Sunday.

The White House announced the arrival of the forces deployed to the island to assist in expanding the terrorist prison to be used as housing for illegal migrants.

A joint Instagram post by the White House, President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance on Sunday afternoon includes two images of a military plane landing in Guantanamo Bay with Marines.

'U.S. Marines have arrived at Guantanamo Bay to support the Department of Defense and Homeland Security in expanding the Migrant Operations Center—advancing President Trump's mission to protect Americans and secure our nation,' the caption reads.

The U.S. naval base was most famously used as a prison for terrorists, including those involved in plotting the September 11, 2001 attacks. It became infamous for the use of enhanced interrogation methods used on prisoners.

Housing migrants at what has become colloquially known as GITMO comes as the new administration grapples with where to hold illegal and undocumented migrants in the push towards mass deportation.

The White House has already run into issues with some countries refusing to take back their migrants.

Last weekend, Trump and Colombia's President Gustavo Petro got into a public spat when he refused to accept military planes full of his citizens that illegally migrated to the U.S.

Colombia's leader folded when Trump immediately threatened economic and diplomatic sanctions.

Meanwhile, Trump's Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem did not rule out the potential of holding migrant children at the former prison camp.

'Could women, children, and families be held there, at Guantanamo?' NBC News host Kristen Welker asked.

'You know, if you look at what we are doing today of targeting the worst of the worst, we've been very clear on that. The priority of this president is to go after criminal aliens that are making our streets more dangerous,' Noem told Meet the Press in her Sunday interview.

Noem said it only made sense to 'use the facilities that we have' to house all migrants, including children.

'I think you're well aware we have other detention facilities, other places in the country,' Noem added. 'So we will utilize what we have according to what's appropriate for the individuals that we have gone out on these targeted operations with local law enforcement and task forces.'

Trump has already deployed an additional 1,500 soldiers and Marines to assist the roughly 2,500 who were already stationed at the southern border.

He plans to send a total of 10,000 U.S. troops to help with operations, which includes closing the border, stopping the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs and trafficked women and children over the barrier of the U.S. and Mexico.

It's unclear if the Marines who landed at the Guantanamo Bay base on Sunday are part of those already deployed or part of an additional unit sent to 'support housing of illegal aliens.'

It's also unknown how many Marines are part of the mission in GITMO.

The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a DailyMail.com request for comment.
