BAFTAs 2026 winners: One Battle After Another dominates with six gongs as Jessie Buckley is awarded Best Actress - but Timothée Chalamet is SNUBBED

One Battle After Another was the big winner at the 2026 British Academy Film Awards on Sunday night, as it scooped six gongs during the ceremony at London's Royal Festival Hall.

The Paul Thomas Anderson hit had already received a record 14 nominations, and came out on top as it won Best Film, Best Director, Adapted Screenplay, Supporting Actor, Cinematography and Editing.

While Jessie Buckley won Best Actress honour for her role in Hamnet, having been favourite to do so, the night wasn't without surprises, as Timothée Chalamet missed out on Best Actor to a home-grown favourite.

Despite being tipped as a favourite for the honour for his role in Marty Supreme, Timothée lost out on the prize to I Swear star Robert Aramayo.

As One Battle For Another was awarded Best Film, producer Sarah Murphy said: 'We wish more than anything that our producing partner Adam Somner could be here to accept this on behalf of us on his home turf.'

Director and producer Paul Thomas Anderson said: 'Thank you for rewarding our film in the way that you have, its just a tremendous honour.

'I'm well aware of the other films that share this. Anybody that says movies aren't any good any more they can piss off because this is just a great f*****g year.'

He added that he planned to go and find a 'bar somewhere to go celebrate'.

During the winner's Press Conference, Paul Anderson reflected on working with Leonardo DiCaprio.

He said: 'I think with Leo, it's one long run on sentence. It's when you start to work with him. He's asking questions. He's curious.

'He wants to take the whole thing apart and put it back together again and make sure that he has covered every possibility within a scenario.

'This is a great gift, by collaborating with him, he's not just an actor, he's a terrific writer and his understand of his role and the entire story, is his super power.'

The biggest loser of the evening was the highly acclaimed ping pong drama Marty Supreme, which went into the evening as one of the favourites, with 11 nominations. It came away completely empty-handed.

Jessie, who is already tipped as a favourite to win the Oscar for Best Actress, used her acceptance speech to thank her fellow nominees.

After accepting her award, Jessie headed into the winners room to proudly pose with her BAFTA in hand
This will no doubt add to Jessie's hopes that she will win the Oscar for Best Actress next month
Upon learning of his son's honour, Robert's father jumped to his feet and was shouting and jumping up and down when his son’s name was read
From the stage, Aramayo said: 'I absolutely can't believe this. I can't believe I'm looking at people like you, never mind that I'm stood here'

From the stage, Aramayo said: 'I absolutely can't believe this. I can't believe I'm looking at people like you never mind that I'm stood here'

She said: 'This is really such an incredible honour. As a little girl I never thought in a million years I would be allowed to make a film but here I am.

'When I arrived into my agent Lindy King in London, and I had nuclear bad fake tan on, white hoop earrings, a polka dot red skirt and dress, and I had the audacity to say to her that I dreamed to someday be something like Judi Dench.

'I don't know how on gods green earth she even dreamed that was possible. Thank you Lindy for always encouraging me to be disobedient and curious and human.

'This really does belong to the women who have taught me and continue to teach me how to do it differently.'

Thanking her fellow nominees, Jessie forgot to include Kate Hudson and asked the audience: 'Who have I left out?'

She then added 'I am in awe of all your incredible performances thank you.'

'Maggie O'Farrell thank you for this role. You brought the mother out of the shadows and stood her next to that absolute giant that is Shakespeare.'

Meanwhile viewers, and guests in attendance, were stunned when it was announced that Robert had been awarded Best Actor for I Swear, beating out Hollywood heavyweights Timothée Chalamet and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Upon learning of his son's honour, Robert's father jumped to his feet and was shouting and jumping up and down when his son's name was read.

From the stage, Aramayo said: 'I absolutely can't believe this. I can't believe I'm looking at people like you never mind that I'm stood here.

He added: 'I honestly cannot believe that I have won this award I really cannot. Everyone in this category blows me away.'

'When I was in school Ethan Hawke came to speak to us at Juilliard and he gave an amazing talk on longevity as an actor, protecting your instrument and avoiding self destructive behaviours, it had an incredible impact on every one in that room.'

Mere minutes before that gong, Robert had been awarded the EE BAFTA Rising Star prize, the only award voted for by members of the public.

He said: 'Oh my word this is really scary last time I was at BAFTA I dropped the award, I hope this goes better.

'I want to acknowledge my family who support me all the time I can see my dad up there and my mum and my sister and my amazing partner I love you all so much and my second family my I Swear family and thank you so much for letting me tell your story. John Davidson is the most amazing person I have ever met.'

Robert Aramayo's father said that it was like hearing your son had been picked to play football for Barcelona when his boy got into New York's Juilliard School. He was the only Brit among 4,000 admitted.

Originally from Hull, Aramayo has established himself in the public eye after parts in Game of Thrones and The Lord of The Rings.

Hamnet recieved two awards on the night, as it was also awarded the coveted honour of Outstanding British Film, beating out I Swear and The Ballad of Wallis Island.

Despite praise for his performance as a young William Shakespeare, star Paul Mescal failed to win the award for Supporting Actor, losing out to Sean Penn for his role in One Battle After Another.

After the win was announced, the film's young stars Jacobi Jupe and Olivia Lynes shared a sweet hug on stage, while producer Sam Mendes accepted the honour.

Sam said that the process of making the film, based on the book by Maggie O'Farrell, had been 'just wonderful for everyone involved in it'.

He added: 'I have to shout out to my co-producer Steven Spielberg for his commitment to film and to film makers, and for loving this movie from the very start.'

Lead producer Liza Marshall thanked the crew and cast - naming Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal - as well as Irish writer Maggie O'Farrell, and the film's director Chloe Zhao.

Sinners star Wunmi Mosaku was among the early winners as she received the award for Supporting Actress for her role in the Ryan Coogler film.

Mosaku, who is pregnant with her second child, thanked her husband, family and daughter from the stage, and said that her mother had 'beamed' her love at her 'to give me the freedom to make my choices'.

She said that playing priestess Annie in Sinners she had connected with a part of herself which she had 'dimmed as an immigrant trying to fit in'.

Ryan Coogler wrote the role of Hoodoo priestess Annie in Sinners especially for Mosaku, who was raised in Manchester and sang for 11 years in the Manchester Girls' Choir.

A RADA graduate, she was catapulted into the spotlight in the 2010 film I Am Slave, in which she played a Sudanese girl sold into slavery.

She won a TV BAFTA as Best Supporting Actress for her role as Damilola Taylor's mother Gloria in Damilola, Our Loved Boy, and has appeared in blockbusters Deadpool & Wolverine and Batman vs Superman.

The actress was born in Zaria, Nigeria to parents who are both professors, she now lives in Los Angeles and is expecting her second child.

'It's just been the best feeling ever because we really loved this film,' said Mosaku, who has previously won a Bafta TV Award for her role as Gloria Taylor in the TV film Damilola, Our Loved Boy.

Of Sinners she said: 'We really poured everything we had into it, and so the audiences showing up and showing so much love for the film last year was so overwhelming and so affirming.

'Now to have these nominations come in, it's just been the cherry on top.'

Wumni then broke down into tears in the Winners Press Conference room upon finding out Sinners' director and writer, Ryan Coogler, won the BAFTA for Best Original Screenplay.

She said: 'Ryan credits everyone who's ever poured into him. He doesn't have an ego. And he says, "I couldn't have done it without you. You couldn't have done it without the audience. You couldn't have done it without the crew, catering, like everyone."

'He lets everyone know on the set that they are so important and we can't do it without them.

'So yeah, that's what makes Ryan so special, because it's true we, none of we all are standing on the shoulders of giants, and even if you feel small, you're still a giant in someone's world.

Sam said that the process of making the film, based on the book by Maggie O'Farrell, had been 'just wonderful for everyone involved in it'

'And those are the people who poured into writing. And that's why he saw he wasn't affected by what the outside world told him was valuable.

'He said, 'No, she's valuable. I want Annie [Wumni's character] to look like her, feel like her', because those are the people who love him.'

Sinners' win for Best Original Screenplay meant it was three wins for the film, as it was also awarded Best Original Score.

Accepting his script-writing honour, director Ryan Coogler admitted, 'I didn't expect that!'

The Black Panther frontman then shared the story of his first trip to the UK, and it feeling like home to him.

After thanking the film's producers' crew and Warner Bros, he praised his cast, adding: 'I come from a community that loves me... I love them back...

'When you look at a blank page, think of who you love, think of someone you see in pain and help them feel better'.

Sean Penn was awarded Best Supporting Actor for One Battle After Another, beating out favourites including Stellan Skarsgård.

This also meant Paul Mescal missed out on the honour, despite earning critical praise for his performance in Hamnet.

The Milk star was not present to accept the honour, leading presenter Gillian Anderson to joke: 'I'm going to take it.'

The blockbuster was also awarded the honour of Best Director for Paul Thomas Anderson, in a hotly-contested category.

Gushing about the honour, he excitedly said: 'I feel like the prettiest girl in the room right now. This is very overwhelming and wonderful thank you very much.

'Look at my cast I could thank all of you but I want to give Leo a really particular special thank you. Leo asks you all the right questions, and when you are asked the right questions you find the right answers.'

Paul also paid tribute to the film's producer and first assistant director, Adam Somner, who died in November.

He added: 'You may think that your greatest export is Alfred Hitchcock or Charlie Chaplin but it wasn't to me, it was Adam Somner who was my assistant director and producer for about 20 years.

'About three weeks into production of this film he found out he was very ill. Thank you for sending him to me and thank you for this award.'

One Battle After Another added to its win roster with an award for Best Adapted Screenplay - leading director Paul Thomas Anderson to nearly drop his BAFTA mask as he began his speech - and Best Cinematography.

He assured the audience he 'doesn't take [the award] lightly' and thanked his cast and crew.

Jacob Elordi had also been nominated in the category for his role as the Monster in Guillermo Del Toro's Frankenstein, but he was not present at the awards.

Other nominations in the category included Benicio Del Toro for One Battle After Another, Petter Mullan for I Swear and Stellan Skarsgård for Sentimental Value.

Paul was also snubbed during the Oscar nominations, however his Hamnet co-star Jessie Buckley is nominated for Leading Actress at both the Oscars and the BAFTAs.

Later in the show, Alan left Kylie Jenner bemused as he handed out 'very British snacks' to stars in the audience.

The billionaire make-up mogul was handed a giant Jammy Dodger from the Scottish actor who is presenting the ceremony for the first time.

Kylie was left looking confused by the iconic British biscuit, which features two shortcake layers sandwiched with a raspberry or strawberry-flavoured jam filling and a heart-shaped hole in the middle.

Sitting next to Kylie was her boyfriend and BAFTA nominee Timothée Chalamet, who was given a packet of the British pub snack, Scampi Fries.

Meanwhile host Alan handed Emma Stone a packet of Hula Hoops crisps, he asked: 'Do you know what a Hula Hoop is?'

She replied: 'No but that sounds delightful'.

Moving on, Alan said: 'Leo how do you like the sound of an Oaty Hobnob Flapjack', as he passed Leonardo DiCaprio a packet of biscuits from his woven picnic basket.

Rapper Stormzy was given his 'favourite snack', a bag of Skips, while Hollywood actor Rose Byrne and Bad Neighbours actress wife Bobby Cannavale were handed Twiglets during the segment.

Alan added: 'I think you guys are Twiglets kind of people, Rose said I'm starving, I've covered her needs', he joked.

Alan's stint as host didn't go down well with viewers, and they were quick to share their thoughts on X.

They said: '#baftas Alan Cumming, Chris that's cringe; Alan Cummings [sic] opening of the BAFTAs is so tedious to get through;

'Is it me or Alan C is doing a bad job as the presenter? His opening monologue is just cringe and not funny;

'WTAF is going on at the #BAFTAs? #AlanCummings is AWFUL and nobody is laughing. I feel more alcohol should be flowing...

'That opening was dreadful, the jokes weren't landing at all. The silence was deafening.'

Presented by Paddington Bear, the award for Best Children's & Family Film was given to Boong, an Indian Manipuri-language coming-of-age drama.

Zootropolis 2 was awarded Best Animated Film, while Best Sound was given to F1.

The film tells the story of two young brothers exploring Lagos with their estranged father during the 1993 Nigerian election crisis.

Accepting the award, Akinola said the film was for 'all those whose parents migrated for a better life for their children,' before going on to declare: 'Free Palestine.'

Best Casting was given to I Swear, while Best Editing was given to One Battle After Another.

The first award of the night was for Special Visual Effects, which was awarded to Avatar: Fire and Ash.

Alan Cumming who is presenting for the first time kicked off proceedings by saying he believed many of the movies nominated had been inspired by difficult current events - hinting at the political unrest in the United States.

He joked watching Marty Supreme, which stars Timothée Chalamet, had felt like a 'core workout' before bemoaning Hamnet's tragic story of a child's death.

'Do you know the plot of Zootropolis 2? Lies, corrupt leaders, poisoning, and persecution of a race. Too soon, Disney, come on,'

'It's almost as though, I don't know, there are events going on in the real world that are influencing filmmakers. Anyone know what I'm talking about? No. Ring any bells for you Americans, particularly?'.

He then suggested everyone joining him in 'one big collective primal scream' before letting out a huge yell, and asking: 'That felt better, didn't it?'

KPop Demon Hunters fans were treated to a performance of the hit song Golden by Rei Ami, EJAE and Audrey Nuna from the group Huntr/x.

Clare Binns, Creative Director of Picture House Cinemas, was presented with the BAFTA Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema award.

After beginning her work as an usher in the 1980s, she collaborated with filmmakers including Danny Boyle, Francis Lee, Steve McQueen, Shola Amoo, Charlotte Regan and Alice Winocour.

Paying tribute to her family, Clare said: 'Thank you for putting up with my obsession with film, even when it came at a cost to you.'

She finished her speech: 'Vivre le cinema!'

The British Chairman of NBCUniversal Entertainment was celebrated for her prolific career and as of the most influential and respected figures in the entertainment industry.
