Australia lead by one run

The hosts have taken the lead with Ben Stokes returning for his 17th over.

Fears have been mounting over the England star in the last few overs as he's walking up and down the wicket here, grimacing in some pain.

It looks like it might just a bit of cramp, thankfully, with Stokes having put in a mammoth effort today.

We've just stopped for a drinks break and Stokes appears to have just taken a shot of pickle juice, grimacing as he chugged down the tonic.

Australia 334-6 and lead by one run.

Big appeal from England!

A huge cry goes for lbw goes up as Ben Stokes sends a ball down to Michael Neser.

Stokes isn't totally sure himself but with three reviews remaining, his England team-mates Harry Brook and Joe Root encourage him to review the delivery.

However, it's no good for England, with the ball appearing to hit Neser's bat before his pad.

Neser breathes a sigh of relief.

WICKET: Stokes skittles Inglis

Another huge wicket with the skipper leading by example.

His perseverance is paying off and he deserved that wicket, swinging the ball down towards Josh Inglis, who can't react to the change in direction of the ball in time, with the ball clattering into his stumps.

Ben Stokes has thrown everything he has at the Australian batters and will want to be wary of how much he's bowling here to avoid fatigue, with Stokes having bowled 16 overs, conceding 92 runs for two wickets.

Though a positive knock from Inglis, he walks for 23 runs off 25 deliveries.

Australia 329-6 and trail England by five runs.

Australia 325-5: Stokes is fighting hard

Ben Stokes is the ultimate competitor.

I can just see him willing himself on here to try and bring in another wicket for his side.

Weirdly, Stokes has left a big gap between his slips here and Josh Inglis takes full advantage, clipping a ball straight through the gap out to third man.

Stoke sinks to his haunches and covers his eyes, knowing that could have been a catch had he moved his field around.

He has also had a tough day with the ball, returning figures of 90-1.

Inglis and Carey, meanwhile, have settled in nicely here after a turbulent period out in the middle.

Australia 325-5 and trail England by eight runs.

What have you made of TNT Sports' Ashes coverage?

Our man Mike Keegan has delivered his take on TNT Sports' Ashes coverage and personally, I couldn't agree more with him.

It's been a difficult few months for TNT, who, on the eve of the Ashes announced that they had lost their rights to show the Champions League and were also walking away from the Autumn Internationals in 2026.

Many have been left a little disappointed by the broadcaster's coverage of the Ashes so far, with their bland commentary and poor editing decisions seeing many turn their tellys on mute and switch over to listen to BBC's Test Match Special or even tune into Aussie broadcast streams.

Catch of the year contender?

Two wickets in three deliveries, this Test match has been flipped on its head

Australia have eaten their way into England's lead and now only trail by 29 runs.

They had taken all the sting out of the Bazballers' attack and were well in control of the match for most of the day, with Steve Smith and Cameron Green combining well to frustrate England.

But it is amazing how quickly things can change in Test cricket.

England had looked lost for moments during this evening session and it seemed like they had run out of ideas.

Brydon Carse, meanwhile, has been punished by the Aussie batters, but now he's suddenly got three wickets, and could have had Alex Carey's wicket too!

It's just what England needed, and now their tails are up, with Ben Stokes egging his players on in the outfield.

Smith, who leaves the crease for 61, will be livid at his dismissal. The stand-in skipper has mishit a few shots tonight and that was another, clipping the ball of his top edge out to Will Jacks whose catch has galvanised his side.

Alex Carey and Josh Inglis have now arrived at the crease and need to settle things down.

Australia 305-5 and trail England by 29 runs.

WICKET: EXTRODINARY CATCH BY WILL JACKS

Will Jacks take a bow.

Steve Smith clips the ball out at pace to leg gully and the Surrey allrounder comes from nowhere, leaping high into the air to pluck the ball out of the Brisbane night sky with one hand.

That is a huge moment for England after Ben Duckett put down Alex Carey.

But the reactions of Jacks to get a hand to the ball were sensational.

It was also a solid delivery from Brydon Carse, who takes another wicket and moves to 97-3.

Australia 292-5 and trail England by 42 runs.

Duckett drops Alex Carey!

I can't believe it!

The England batsman doesn't react quick enough as new batsman Alex Carey clips the ball out wide to Ben Duckett, who dives but can't control the ball.

That's a huge let-off for Carey.

WICKET: Carse gets the breakthrough!

That is a HUGE wicket from Brydon Carse!

He's had a torrid day and has copped criticism from some Australian pundits but he's struck when his side needed him, removing Cameron Green.

The Aussie allrounder set up for another short delivery but Carse fooled him, delivering a yorker straight, which careered right into the stumps.

Green, bizarrely, appeared to just step out of the way in anticipation of the short delivery.

Australia 291/4.

Australia 290-3: Deflated England desperately need a wicket

England look deflated. This is slowly slipping away from them with Cam Green and Steve Smith only seven runs away from bringing up a partnership century.

Ben Stokes has picked up the ball and looks set to bowl at Green in this next over in a bid to try and galvanise his side.

That's no discredit to Green or Smith either, they've settled in incredibly well with Green now on 44 off 55 balls while Smith is 61 from 80.

Australia 290-3 and trail England by 44 runs.

Australia 287-3: England expense more runs

Again that was a brutal over from Carse.

Carse expensed a 4, 3, 6, 1, 1, WD, 1 during that over with his figures now moving to 95-1.

It's just not been his day with England having been guilty of bowling just way too short with Aussie cricket legend Mark Waugh offering a brutal assessment of Carse's day.

'He's bowled poorly. He has not put two balls in the one spot in any over,' Waugh told Fox Cricket.

'At this level you've got to be better … you look at (where he's bowled), that's third-grade standard and all over the place.

'Sorry to those third graders watching, but that isn’t great for a Test bowler.'
