A team-mate of Mason Greenwood is backing the Marseille forward to earn an England recall in time for the World Cup next summer.

The former Manchester United star, who left Old Trafford under controversial circumstances in the summer of 2024, has been in sensational scoring form for the French club this campaign, netting 10 goals from 12 league matches so far.

Greenwood, 24, was arrested in January 2022 and charged with attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour and assault while playing at Manchester United.

Although the charges were subsequently dropped 13 months later, the forward was removed from the Red Devils' squad and has since been overlooked for England selection, eventually moving to France to continue his career.

Despite leaving his Manchester United days behind him, Greenwood is reportedly still dreaming of an England return, having recently snubbed the opportunity to play for Jamaica's national team.

In total, Greenwood has scored 33 goals in 53 games since leaving United for Marseille, establishing himself as one of the most prolific strikers in Europe.

His Marseille team-mate Timothy Weah has labelled him an 'amazing person and character'

Timothy Weah, son of AC Milan legend and Ballon d'Or winner George, has thrown his support behind his Marseille team-mate Greenwood, backing the one-cap forward to make an unexpected return in time for the World Cup.

Greenwood earned his sole Three Lions cap under Gareth Southgate against Iceland in September 2020.

'When I speak about Mason it's a special feeling because it's very rare in a lifetime that you get to share the pitch with such an amazing player and amazing character,' Weah told The Sun.

'We've grown closer since I've joined the team and been here. Hopefully he gets that call-up soon. I'm super proud of him.

'He's having an amazing season and hopefully I can help him to reach those heights that he's aiming for.'

Greenwood and Weah starred together during Marseille's 2-1 win over Newcastle in the Champions League on Tuesday, each flanking former Arsenal star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who netted twice on the night.

Three Lions head coach Thomas Tuchel has yet to rule out the possibility of Greenwood's return publicly since taking over in January, although the prospect of him wearing an England shirt again appears highly unlikely.

In September, after Greenwood kept the door to England ajar by refusing an approach from Jamaica, Tuchel said: 'I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp.

'My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought.

'He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team. I don't rule anything out but he is no priority at the moment.'
