A top judge in Iowa was arrested for driving under the influence after she was allegedly found passed out on the wrong side of a major highway.
Chief Judge for Iowa's Second Judicial District, Adria Kester was taken into custody on Tuesday after reports a truck rolling in the wrong direction near Boone.
The 55-year-old was allegedly spotted by other drivers who said she 'looked unconscious' and was 'slumped over the steering wheel', according to a criminal complaint from the Boone County Sheriff's Office cited by the Des Moines Register.
A witness watched as her car rolled across the median until they climbed through the back window and put the truck in park, according to the document.
Officials claimed that Kester had bloodshot watery eyes and slurred speech.
They also alleged that she was 'unsteady and could not walk on her own' and refused to answer questions or take a field sobriety test.
A cup with a 'liquid that smelled like alcohol' was also found in the vehicle, according to Deputies.
Kester was charged with operating while intoxicated and was arrested at 4am on November 5 but was released later that morning without bond.
Officials also obtained a warrant to draw the judge's blood at Boone County Hospital, but the arrest document does not include any results, according to the outlet.
Boone County Sheriff Andy Godzicki noted he was relieved no one was hurt during the incident, according to The Independent.
Matt Lindholm, her lawyer, said in a statement: 'Judge Kester recognizes the seriousness of the situation and is fully cooperating with law enforcement and the judicial process.'
'She is committed to addressing this matter responsibly and in accordance with the law,' he added.
The judge has pleaded not guilty.
Kester's position of power has complicated her case. A district associate judge stepped aside because of the nature of her 'professional relationship' with the chief judge.
Kester's case was requested to be sent to a different district by Iowa Chief Justice Susan Christensen, who had appointed Kester to chief judge in the district.
Judge Gregory Brandt was assigned.
Kester was the first woman to hold the post of district associate judge in Iowa's Second Judicial District. She joined the bench in 2013, according to the outlet.
