An adorable wiener dog feared dead after being flung from a car in a Wyoming crash has been found alive after surviving more than a week in the wilderness.
On October 24, 33-year-old Amanda Lohr and her boyfriend packed up their 2005 Buick Century - along with their dachshund Chewie and cat Newt - and hit I-80 from Kokomo to Portland, Oregon, to visit a friend, according to Cowboy State Daily.
But at around 6.30pm, a semi-truck attempting to pass slammed into their small car, sending it rolling three times before it came to rest in a ditch.
While the 18-wheeler fled the scene, Lohr was taken to a hospital in Rawlins with minor injuries and her boyfriend was airlifted to Casper, where he spent eight days recovering from a neck fracture.
The family’s cat suffered severe injuries in the crash and had to be euthanized. Their seven-year-old pup, Chewie, was hurled from the car and presumed dead, with officials fearing he’d been hit by passing traffic on the interstate.
Reeling from the crash and having just lost her job and insurance, Lohr was heartbroken. She ultimately decided to give up her remaining cat to a loving home, believing she couldn’t care for him in her situation, according to her Facebook post.
But on Monday, Lohr’s phone rang with the news she thought she’d never hear: Chewie was alive and ready to come home.
'I was really happy because I had been mourning for more than a week,' she told Cowboy State Daily, adding that her daughter burst into tears of joy when she heard Chewie was alive.
Chewie’s heartwarming story is a testament to humanity, thanks to strangers who stopped on the busy road to help the frightened pup.
Kenny Coomes, a FedEx long-haul trucker, was making one of his regular trips between Salt Lake City and Scottsbluff, Nebraska, days after the car wreck when he spotted Chewie along I-80.
He immediately pulled over and leapt from his truck to catch the little dog, but his attempt proved unsuccessful.
Coomes, a devoted dog lover whose Facebook is packed with photos of his pets, set a live trap with food and a blanket by the side of the interstate, hoping Chewie would eventually take the bait.
On Facebook, Coomes said he saw the dog twice along the road before he vanished. He feared the pup had been abandoned and worried a coyote might have gotten him.
Then on Monday, Scott and Kodi Allred, both 49, were traveling the same stretch of interstate on their way to see their son at the University of Northern Colorado, according to Cowboy State Daily.
Around 11am, near Elk Mountain, the couple saw Chewie wandering along the busy interstate, still lost and frightened.
Worried that a single misstep could put Chewie in danger, Scott pulled over his truck, hoping to scoop up the little dachshund and bring him to safety in their car.
'The little guy was terrified and I couldn't get close to him,' he told the outlet. 'I tried to call him to me but he ran off, and I began chasing after him. I tried to cut him off so that he wouldn't run into the road.'
She initially jumped out to chase him, but quickly realized her boots would slow her down. Instead, she hopped into the driver’s seat, keeping a careful eye on Chewie as she drove closer.
Finally, Scott got a hold of him. He slipped a collar over his neck and clipped on a leash.
'His little legs gave out, but man, he was fast,' he told the outlet.
Finding no dog tag, the couple drove roughly an hour to the closest Humane Society office in Laramie.
Workers scanned Chewie and found a microchip under his neck, quickly tracing him back to his owner, Lohr, and his home in Kokomo, Indiana.
Lohr was stunned and relieved, thanking everyone who went out of their way to help rescue Chewie.
'I should be able to pick him up in a week or two. We thought he was dead because a teen came and told us he hit a dog near our accident site and the cops wouldn’t let us go check if it was him or not,' Lohr wrote in a Facebook post.
'This is a miracle and I am so happy he was found,' she added. 'That puppy is my best friend and I can’t wait to have him back with me.'
Coomes couldn’t believe it when a friend tagged him on Facebook with the news of Chewie’s rescue.
'It's amazing,' he told Cowboy State Daily.
He enlisted a fellow FedEx driver to deliver Chewie back home, and the pup will be reunited with his family in the coming days.
In another heartwarming gesture, the couple that captured Chewie set up a GoFundMe to help Lohr and her family, who are beginning with almost nothing.
'This little guy had been thrown from the car and lost, wandering hungry and scared avoiding coyotes and interstate traffic for better than a week,' the fundraiser's description read.
'On top of losing her only car, and nearly her own life, she thought she had lost her little friend,' it added. 'She told us her daughter had been praying for Chewie, even though the family thought he was gone. A little girl’s prayer was answered!'
'I think Chewie’s unlikely survival journey is more than just a nice feel-good side note. I think this happened out of providence, and I believe Amanda’s injuries and hardship can have a happy ending. This sweet little wiener dog can bring her the miracle she needs in her life.'
