This is the heart-stopping moment a hero police officer rammed a driver going 70mph off the road to stop him smashing into innocent cars coming the other way.

The officer gave chase after spotting Gazza Vinyard, 34, from Ipswich, Suffolk, travelling through the town at more than double the 30mph limit at around 10pm on September 9.

The pursuit continued onto the nearby A12 at the village of Foxhall, where the motorist deliberately drove the wrong way, towards oncoming traffic.

The policeman chasing him was forced to use 'tactical contact' to bring him to a stop before he hit the vehicles he was heading for on the carriageway.

Dramatic dashcam footage shows their car nudge the right-hand side Vinyard's Volkswagen Golf to spin it round and bring it to a stop safely.

The driver scrambles out the passenger side of his vehicle and runs into vegetation by the side of the road in an attempt to flee.

Suffolk Police officers in another emergency vehicle, meanwhile, leap out with their Tasers in hand and chase the motorist, shouting: 'Stop where you are!'

It was these policemen, PC Ives and PC Norris, who managed to drag him out of the hedgerow and arrest him.

The shocking chase came after the speeder had failed to stop for officers earlier in the day - and again when they encountered him later.

His risky manoeuvres and weaving in and out of traffic had come in a bid to escape from the force's clutches again.

Vinyard, of no fixed address, pleaded guilty to six offences, five of which came during his rampage through Ipswich.

These were dangerous driving, failing to provide a specimen of breath for analysis, failing to stop for police, driving without insurance and driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence.

The sixth charge he admitted was stalking causing serious alarm or distress, which had taken place over a ten-week period, since June 30.

This involved him repeatedly driving past the victim's home address and calling, texting, messaging and following her.

Vinyard was sentenced to 52 weeks in prison, suspended for 24 months, on October 17 at Ipswich Magistrates' Court.

He was banned from driving for two years and will have to take an extended re-test.

And the motorist must also comply with a rehabilitation and community programme, along with paying £197 in costs and charges.

PC Ives, of Suffolk Police's Roads and Armed Policing Team (RAPT), said: 'Gazza Vinyard made a choice to drive dangerously and therefore he chose to put other members of the public at serious risk.

'This manner of driving will not be tolerated on Suffolk's roads and RAPT officers will continue to work tirelessly to pursue these types of offenders and put them before the courts.

'Vinyard's actions were reckless and a serious threat to the lives of others - particularly at the point that he opted to drive the wrong way on a dual carriageway, towards oncoming vehicles at high speed.

'We were forced to take decisive action in order ensure public safety and end the pursuit before other motorists came to any harm.

'Vinyard doesn't only pose a risk to other motorists but is also a threat in the domestic environment - as evidenced by his conviction for the stalking offence.

'RAPT officers regularly assist other departments across the organisation with apprehending suspects and we were very pleased to secure the arrest of Vinyard and see him brought to justice for all his crimes.'
